Photorealism, the art movement of the 1980′s, is where artist used photography on their canvas to allow them to give an accurate image. Many artists would then use airbrush typically used for photoshop to give them the perfect and most precise image. As photorealism is used from photos it has aspects of being real however also has a slight unrealistic look due to the work being doe from a photograph and not from observation. Most photorealist artists used mass images such as cars, restaurants to show people the beauty and art aspect these everyday items have.

In the 80′s everyone wanted to wear branded clothes Coca-Cola started selling clothing pieces which everyone wanted in 1987. After this everyone went crazy for branded clothes and this is how sports brands became fashionable for casual outfits. The TV programme MTV started in the US in the late 80′s and helped trends to go all round the world, such as the trend for everyone to own a pair of Jordan’s from Nike the fastest growing brand of all time.

Other sport brands popular in the 80′s include Adidas and Reebok. Looking back on the 80′s the most popular would be Nike who are still the leading brand in sports footwear and they still use the same styles as they did in the 80′s however slightly modernised.

Kate Hamnett was another designer popular in the 1980′s however completely different to Thierry Mugler. Hamnett’s work was very political and was for the people in the 8′s who wanted to make a change to their government and the world they were living in through t-shits with bold statements.

This 1980 trend has begun to start coming back in to fashion however instead of political words on t-shirts most people will just have words on a t-shirt which might not mean anything to them.

Along with the trend go big logo t-shirts coming back through theres also the reappearance of Vivienne Westwood’s bra over the to trend making a small comeback.

From looking into the 1980s fashion, one of the most influential designer was Thierry Mugler from Strasbourg, northern France. Mugler’s designs are reflective of the 1980′s with his use of power dressing, a popular trend for women in the 1980′s where their clothes would exaggerate their body shape through using shoulder pads, cinched waists and peplum or details on the hip.

After Mugler had done a few years of shows he decided to go in to theatre clothing I think all of his before he went to the theatre already had the sense of being theatrical due to its extravagance and the dramatic shapes he has formed to the models. Many of the supermodels who modelled for Mugler said that his clothes were very tight and would stop the blood circulating around your body.

In 1981 the most iconic wedding to date took place, between Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Nearly everyone in the 80′s watched the couple get married families all sat round their tv sets to watch the day, those who lived in London were able to stand in the streets and watch the wedding party parade around the city to Buckingham Palace.

From their wedding there was an aftermath of Diana’s dress being copied through out the 80′s women wanted the shoulders to be big and the trains even longer. My mum’s wedding dress was similar to Diana’s, obviously my mum wasn’t a princess so she couldn’t afford the designer dress that Diana had instead many cheaper wedding dress shops were producing dresses just like Diana’s. At my parents wedding they also had flowers arranged in a similar way to Diana however the used a different colour scheme. The bouquet especially was nearly identical to Diana’s.

1980′s - Not all good!

Although the 80′s bought wealth the decade also came with high unemployment rates. In the 70′s money was spent on items with rising prices that the government couldn’t afford, these include oil prices rising and the living wage being used to a higher amount. To tackle the money troubles in the UK the government increased interest rates, reduced spending and made major cutbacks. These changes caused many people unable to get  job as companies couldn’t afford to employ them due to this recession and wages being increased. Main sectors that suffered from unemployment include miners and transport workers, others took hits but not as bad these two sectors.

Other cases of unemployment include the closing down of businesses, jobs becoming more modern meaning people weren’t up to date thus not having the correct skills for a certain job, geographical unemployment; different parts of the UK had more jobs to offer however house prices were high in the 80′s so people might not have been able to afford a new house.

By the 1990′s house prices dropped to an all time low within the first few years to then jump back up again in the recession within the 90′s.  Unemployment levels were still high in the 90′s but lowered slightly.

1980 Riches

Couture fashion in the 1980′s was on the rise with the amount of millionaires doubling in Britain, more money was injected into fashion and designer brands. An example of the type of money being thrown around is the Hermès leather bottle holding bag, only big enough to fit a branded bottle of mineral water. At the start of the decade mineral water just 12 million bottles were sold at the end of the decade 152 million bottles of mineral water were sold in a year. The leader of the mineral water brand was Perrier, a bottle of Perrier showed your level in society, it meant that you had health and knew what was going on throughout the world around you. Evian also played on the publics high demand of bottled water, their adverts persuaded viewers that if you drink Evian water you will become healthier and a more gorgeous person. The adverts used people who were working out in the gym or had just finished in the gym, making them sweaty in their skintight clothes that showed off their perfectly sculpted bodies. this made a strong link between bottled water being healthy for you making the industry boom as more people wanted to be better than the next.

Got it from Mum’s Wardrobe

So to find this 80′s dress I rummaged through my Mum’s Wardrobe, where I found this dress shoved at the back along with a few other 80′s and 90′s pieces. I actually quite like the movement of the pleats on this dress they flow nicely due to the light fabric they have been made from. I can safely say I’m not a fan of the pink bow however it was relevant to the time and incorporated bright colours of the 80′s into a more formal fashion. I wish I could see some photos of my mum wearing this dress in the 80′s with her hair permed and big earrings as now she’s the complete opposite to her former self. As well as this I think it would be interesting to see this dress in the atmosphere of the 80′s, for example at a dinner and dance or at a occasion.

Here is the link for a Dazed and confused interview where David Bowie is interviewing Alexander McQueen, my all time favourite fashion designer, I love the honesty between the two icons in this interview. they had never met each other in person only over the phone yet they sound like a long term friends who can have meaningful conversations and just understand each other.
